Founder of the Hudson River School.

Born in England and moved to Ohio. Died in the Catskills. Painted with his sister Sarah Cole. Painted landscape and allegorical historical paintings. 

His romantic paintings in America include: "The Oxbow," "Sunrise in the Catskills", "The Tempest", "The Last of the Mohicans, Cora," " The Garden of Eden."

He has a museum in Cedar Grove and his name is used for the highest mountain in the Catskills.
