Shainberg painted this from a picture of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where he grew up. Signs can be seen in both English and Yiddish as well as pushcarts, yentas and merchants. Some cobblestones erupt here and there and the tenement buildings have been given a warm reddish veneer.
